Insider: Davies is 'the real winner under Conte' and 'no-one expected it' at Tottenham

Ben Davies can expect an extended run in the Tottenham side after being handed a new role by Antonio Conte.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Davies, 28, has started both of Antonio Conte’s games as Tottenham manager on the left side of a back three.

He also started and was heavily criticised in Nuno Espirito Santo’s last game against Manchester United.

Davies is left-footed and has played as a centre-back for Wales.

Wenham insists this means he is in for an extended run in the first team as Conte will favour playing a left-footer in that role.

“The real winner under Conte so far is Ben Davies,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He seems to have been shoehorned into the team because he has a left foot.

“He’s played for Wales as a left-sided centre back as part of a three so that is why he is there.

“I don’t see this being a long-term option but I think he can expect to be in the team until Conte gets his own guys in.

“He likes having a left-footer playing in that position. No one expected him to come in but he hasn’t done too badly.

“Davies has a chance to prove a few people wrong, he was heavily criticised after the Man United game.

“I was one of those people and I stand by the criticism but let’s see what Conte can get out of him.”

Davies has made 10 appearances this season.

He has registered one assist.
