Insider: Doherty to stay at Tottenham after 'opening talks with Wolves'

Matt Doherty will stay at Tottenham despite “opening talks” with Wolves earlier this month.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Doherty, 30, has heavily featured for Tottenham in January after struggling for game time

He started both games against Chelsea in the EFL Cup and played a vital role off the bench against Leicester on Wednesday (19 January).

On 4 January, this site revealed Wolves had submitted a bid to Spurs for their former right-back.

However, Wenham expects Doherty to stay after earning Antonio Conte’s trust.

“I know for a fact Wolves opened talks with Tottenham about a move for Doherty earlier this month,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It seemed like he was set to go. His performance against Leicester on Wednesday was fantastic.

“He has really contributed in recent weeks and was a constant threat against Leicester.

“It was the best I’ve seen him play for us. He found it tough up against Chelsea yesterday but I won’t hold too much against him for that.

“It seems Doherty has earned his place in the squad and he will be used by Conte.

“Conte looks like he trusts him because there are other options for him to use but Doherty has been selected in recent weeks over those options.”

Doherty has now featured 15 times for Tottenham this season.

10 of these outings have come under Conte.

In other news, Tottenham have been tipped to complete four new signings this weeks after a transfer update from Alasdair Gold.
