International tells agent he wants to sign for Rangers after offer reportedly accepted
Norwich defender Russell Martin has confirmed that he is on his way to sign for Rangers and said he alerted his agent of his eagerness to move to Ibrox as soon as he knew the Glasgow side were interested.
Martin, 32, flew into Glasgow Airport on Tuesday to put the finishing touches to a supposed loan move to the Light Blues.
After arriving in Scotland, the Norwich club captain made it public that there were also teams in the English Championship that were interested in snapping him up, however the prospect of joining Rangers was too much for him to turn down.
“There’s still a bit to do but let’s get it done today – as you can see from this big suitcase I’m expecting to stay for a while,” he said after arriving in Glasgow, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“There’s been interest from a lot of clubs – Championship down in England.
“But as soon as I knew Rangers were interested a couple of weeks ago I said to my agent from the off this was the one I wanted.”
Martin has struggled for opportunities for Norwich this season as Daniel Farke’s men sit firmly mid-table in the Championship.
The Scotland international will no doubt see his loan move to Rangers as chance to revive his stalling career.
The Herald has previously reported that Martin is due to have a medical with the Light Blues over the coming hours and will become Graeme Murty’s fourth signing of the January transfer window.
It was understood that Norwich had accepted Rangers’ loan offer for the centre-back, who is now close to completing his move.
Football Insider verdict
It’s no wonder that Martin has snubbed the chance to move elsewhere in the Championship when Rangers came calling. The defender seems to believe he has a shot at reviving his international career and the best way for him to do that will probably be by helping the Gers revive their form and help them to a second placed finish in the Scottish Premiership. Martin will likely be a starter for Rangers but his partner may be a headache for Murty. Fabio Cardoso has made it clear he has things to achieve at Ibrox while Danny Wilson is probably the more obvious choice. This new-look side Murty has put together is shaping up to be a very exciting one.
In other Rangers news, a manager has confirmed he is in talks with this centre-forward who is edging closer to a move to Ibrox.
