Talks underway: Manager in discussions for striker, Rangers reportedly edging close to deal

Walsall manager Jon Witney has confirmed that he is in talks with West Brom over extending Tyler Roberts’ loan deal at the Bescot.
Roberts, 19, is out of contract at the end of the season and the Scottish Sun has reported that Rangers are edging closer to an agreement to sign the Wales Under-21 international.
Express and Star reporter Matt Wilson claimed on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday that the Glasgow club are “confident” of signing up Roberts for a minimal compensation fee worth around £300,000.

The West Brom striker has been on loan at neighbouring Walsall since the summer but is due to move back to the Hawthorns on January 27.
He has made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Saddlers, scoring five goals and supplying four assists in the process.
Now, Walsall boss Witney has confirmed that he is holding out hope for extending Roberts’ loan at the League One side, although the Baggies have already recalled a few of their youngsters already this month.
“We’re still talking to Albion because we want to keep Tyler,” Whitney said, as quoted by the Express and Star.
“I think for his best interests, he should stay. I think young players need to play games – under-23 football is not what Tyler needs.
“It won’t motivate him and it won’t help him to develop.”
Football Insider verdict
Walsall may well want to keep Roberts but the decision will ultimately come down to him. Witney makes a good point about the Under-23 football, as that will do him no good playing in Premier League 2 when he is getting regular game time in League One. There may be a chance that Walsall and Rangers both get want they want though. Roberts could agree a pre-contract with the Glasgow side and then stay on loan at the Bescot. West Brom must really try to convince Roberts to sign a new deal though, but Alan Pardew’s recent omission of teenager Sam Field from the first-team will do him no favours in offering the Welsh attacker a new deal.
