Connor Goldson is “fully deserving” of a new Rangers contract, according to Alan Hutton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers and Scotland full-back said the 27-year-old has established himself as “one of the first names on the team sheet”.
Football Insider revealed on Monday that the Light Blues are planning to offer him a new contract after his match-winning performance against Celtic on Saturday.
The defender scored both of Rangers’ goals in their 2-0 win as they continued their unbeaten start to the season.
Goldson has two years left on his current contract and the Glasgow giants are keen to fend off interest from Premier League sides Leeds United, Everton, West Ham and West Brom.
“He’s played at a high level and he’s had a taste of playing down south but sometimes as a player when you’re not getting an opportunity you need to take a step sideways,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Coming to Rangers and showing everybody what you’re capable of and I really think he’s done that.
“After not playing so much for Brighton and it looked like his career was done down there and he’s come up here and shown his worth to everyone.
“He’s fully deserving of a new contract in my opinion.
“He’s one of the first names on the team sheet, a go-to man for Gerrard as well. He can really rely on him so it doesn’t surprise me that these talks are coming up now.”
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard told the Daily Record that there was “no rush” to offer Goldson a new deal.
He said: “I think Connor is on a good contract as we speak, there is certainly no rush on that one.”
In other news, it can be REVEALED that Rangers staff have been wowed by an “outstanding” youngster who has been earmarked for a big role.
