Noel Whelan claims that West Brom are on course to pull off a bargain deal as they close in on the permanent signing of Matheus Pereira.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United striker and Championship expert insists that the 23-year-old has more than proved himself since joining from Sporting CP.
As reported by Football Insider, the Baggies have an obligation to buy the Brazilian for an £8million-plus fee once he plays 45 minutes in 30 games this season.
It is understood that his fine form has brought him to the attention of Premier League side West Ham, who are eyeing up a potential transfer deal this summer.
With Pereira now just one 45-minute appearance away from triggering the purchase clause, Whelan insists Slaven Bilic is getting a great deal for an exciting player.
“That’s a snip, isn’t it?” Whelan told Football Insider.
“You’re talking about that for a quality player, that’s been doing it this season and has been looking very, very good – £8.5million is absolutely nothing.
“You’d snatch that with both hands – it would be a great signing, it really would. Loads of creativity, exciting player, £8.5million, it’s a steal, it really is for that sort of player.”
Pereira has been a mainstay for Bilic this season, starting 29 Championship games and playing a total of 34 times across all competitions.
He has been a constant attacking threat for the Baggies, chipping in with 16 assists – the most in the Championship this term – as well as a further six goals.
