Darren Bent has admitted he is baffled by Aston Villa’s capture of Douglas Luiz but says it looks to be an exciting signing for Dean Smith’s men.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa and England star says that he is not sure how his old side will manage to secure the necessary paperwork for the former Manchester City midfielder after the Premier League giants failed.
The Villans confirmed the capture of the Brazilian last week subject to him securing a work permit, with a report explaining that his perceived importance to the Villa squad, with regular playing time on the cards, should help their application.
Bent says that as well the behind-the-scenes issues, he does not see where Douglas is going to fit in, but that it still looks a good signing.
He told Football Insider: “I find it strange that Manchester City couldn’t get a work permit but Villa might get one.
“That’s probably the strangest part, that Manchester City couldn’t get it over the line even though he’s a City player, but Aston Villa are confident that they can.
“It’s tough, he didn’t make an appearance for Manchester City. it seems like another good signing, an exciting signing, it’s one of them where you’re not quite sure how it’s going to work.
“Dean Smith is an experienced manager and obviously he’s seen something that Douglas Luiz can help Aston Villa with.”
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Spanish side Girona, playing 29 times across all competitions, and he leaves Manchester City without a single competitive appearance to his name.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club are battling Derby County for a highly-rated English midfielder.
