Aston Villa defender James Chester has revealed that he has been blown away by summer signing John Terry’s impact on and off the pitch this season.
The 36-year-old completed a permanent move to the Championship side on a free transfer in the summer after more than two decades plying his trade at Chelsea.
Despite a slow start to the campaign, the veteran defender has grown in statute during his first season outside England’s top flight and he has become an integral part to the first-team squad.
Terry notched up his first ever goal for the club in last week’s 2-1 victory against Fulham at Villa Park.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Express, teammate Chester was quick to single out his teammate for praise and states that he is delighted to learn alongside him everyday.
“My first thought was disbelief when I heard the rumours about John Terry coming to Villa, but at 28, for me to be playing next to him and being around him every day, I’m really fortunate,” he said.
“I’m trying to learn all aspects of the game off him. Hopefully that can improve me in the future.”
“The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how he is as a captain off the field. Being a captain, you maybe think it’s just about your duties on the field but it seems to be important to him to make sure that everyone around the club is okay and that they are doing their jobs right as well.
“Even at the age he’s at, John still comes in each day and works hard and tries to improve. It’s impossible not to pick that up when you’re seeing somebody who’s been at the top and won so many things to still do that.”
Bruce appointed Terry as the club captain and under his leadership, Villa are currently sitting in the playoff places in the league table.
Chester, 28, has been Terry’s central defensive partner for the majority of the season and they appear to have formed a fine relationship.
Both players will be looking to start together once more when Villa face Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon.
In other Aston Villa news, Simon Jordan has taken a huge swipe at Birmingham before Sunday’s derby and Villa fans will absolutely love it.
