John Hartson believes that Arsene Wenger must go into the upcoming transfer window with the intention of buying elite players at Arsenal this summer.
The 67-year-old Frenchman recently signed a new two-year deal at the Emirates Stadium to continue his reign as manager.
Wenger’s new deal came after a disappointing fifth-placed finish in the Premier League, which means they will not be in the Champions League next season.
The north London club did manager to win the FA Cup final against Chelsea to claim a piece of silverware last season, but ultimately it was a disappointing year for the Gunners fans.
Hartson has stated it’s critical Arsenal chase the top players in the summer if they become available, highlighting Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk as potential targets.
“I really hope he [Wenger] goes in for the big players that is all I want to see,” Hartson told Youtube channel Arsenal Fan TV. “If Lukaku becomes available, be in for Lukaku, one of the most sought after centre forwards in the Premier League.
“Virgil van Dijk at Southampton. It’s going to cost £50million, but you know Chelsea are going to pay it, you know [Manchester] City are going to pay it and you know Manchester United are going to spend big.”
He added: “I think what would appease the fans is that if Arsene Wenger and Arsenal are in for these big names.”
Arsenal have failed to win a Premier League title since the 2003/04 campaign and were some way short of champions Chelsea last season.
Harston feels they should add some top quality players to help them for next year and add to the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in their squad.
In other Arsenal transfer news, Mesut Ozil has reached an emphatic decision over a contract offer.
