Klopp heaps praise on Liverpool 29-year-old after win v West Brom

By Matt Bullin

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed Simon Mignolet’s performance after his side’s 1-0 win over West Brom on Sunday.

Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of the game at The Hawthorns as he nodded home on the brink of half time after Lucas Leiva’s flick on.

Mignolet made a crucial save to deny Matty Phillips in the final 10 minutes as his side claimed all three points.

The Belgian stopper continued his good form after he made two massive saves to deny Stoke during Liverpool’s 2-1 win last time out.

Liverpool’s win leaves them third in the league as they moved back above Manchester City – who beat Southampton 3-0 on Saturday.

The Reds are now two points clear of City with five games left, although Pep Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after his sides win, Klopp said of Mignolet’s performance: “He was really good, really lively, front-footed, all that stuff. He was very important again.

“At the end it doesn’t look that spectacular but he was really present around the set-pieces, he had three or four or five fists [away].”

Mignolet kept his fifth Premier League clean sheet of the season in his 23rd game – overall Klopp’s side have only got eight clean sheets from their 33 fixtures this season.

The 29-year-old has 55 career clean sheets for Liverpool in his 175 league and cup games.
