Stan Collymore believes that John Ruddy is exactly the kind of player that Aston Villa needs in their squad ahead of next season.

The 30-year-old is currently available on a free transfer after he was released by Norwich as his contract at Carrow Road reaches its conclusion.

The experienced goalkeeper has recently expressed his desire to play for Steve Bruce’s side in the future and help them return to the Premier League.

Collymore is regarded as an icon among the Villa Park faithful, and many fans trust his decisions on the club.

And it seems that after Ruddy’s declaration, the former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest winger would leave to see him stood between the sticks next season.

When asked by a fan what he thinks about Ruddy, Collymore responded on his personal Twitter account: “Solid goalie, great lad. Just what our dressing room needs.”

Ruddy has been a feature in the Norwich squad for the last seven years, and became a big part in helping them spend three years in the Premier League.

However last season saw the one-time England international’s form dip, and he was left out of the side for large chunks of the campaign.

He made 29 appearances across all competitions, but still managed to keep an impressive ten clean sheets, with one of them coming in a 1-0 win for the Canaries against Villa in December.

In other Aston Villa news, Mile Jedinak has said that this player will be key to the club’s chances next season – but it isn’t Jonathan Kodjia.
