'Just to sit on the bench?' - Exclusive: Bent baffled by £25m Everton signing
Gabriel Agbonlahor admitted “it will be interesting to see” what happens with Everton defender Ben Godfrey after he was left on the bench against Manchester United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former England striker questioned why the Toffees would spend £25million on the 22-year-old for him to not play regularly.
A centre-back by trade, Godfrey has operated at right-back in his two appearances for the Toffees since his summer switch.
Michael Keane and Yerry Mina had established themselves as Carlo Ancelotti’s first-choice centre-half pairing in their opening seven Premier League games.
However, Mina was dropped against Man Utd in favour of Mason Holgate who had recovered from a toe injury he picked up in pre-season.
Asked by Football Insider how good it was for Everton to have the 24-year-old back, Agbonlahor said: “It was a big boost and I think that when Holgate is fit, he will start.

“He’s got all the attributes of a centre-half, he can play, he’s got pace, he’s good in the air. I think he’ll be the one that plays with Michael Keane.
“But you look at Ben Godfrey, who they bought for £25million, just to sit on the bench. It’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks with that selection.”
Godfrey signed a five-year contract with Everton after completing a move from Norwich City last month.
The York born defender played 78 times for the Canaries including 30 Premier League games last season.
In other Everton news, a top pundit is “very worried” about what he’s seen at the club which is a “big concern”.
