Kalvin Phillips will now 'consider' joining Newcastle United this summer - expert

Kalvin Phillips would consider an offer to join Newcastle United if it comes this summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

On 4 April, The Mirror reported Newcastle’s interest in signing Phillips, 26, this summer.

The Leeds midfielder is contracted until 2024 but David Anderson of The Mirror reported on 30 March that Phillips has told the Leeds board he wants to sign a new deal.

However, McAvennie insists the lure of Newcastle may be too much for Phillips.

“As long as Newcastle stay up, they are a massive draw,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You look at the project that they are starting and the players they have already signed.

“I don’t see why Phillips wouldn’t consider an offer from Newcastle.

“In four or five years they are going to be right up there challenging.

“Phillips has time on his side so he could be a key part of this revolution the club is about to go through.

“That’s an amazing thing but there will be lots of clubs interested in him.

“Paying top wages is never going to be a problem for them so it’s about the sell.

“I think he’s going to leave Leeds no matter what. He’s too good to be fighting down there and there will be top clubs wanting to sign him.”

A West Ham source told Football Insider on 21 March they are another club preparing to make a bid for Phillips this summer.

He has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season.
