Kevin Phillips has insisted Carlo Ancelotti is an “unbelievable” hire by Everton and they deserve great credit for a “remarkable” coup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker revealed how Ancelotti’s former right-hand man Paul Clement had spoken of the Italian to him as “like the Messiah”.

Everton announced at the end of last month they had appointed Ancelotti as their new manager after he agreed a four-and-a-half year contract.

Phillips shared some insight into what impact the managerial grandee can make at Goodison Park.

“I said it when he went in, what a coup, unbelievable,” Phillips told Football Insider. “To get a man of his calibre and the trophies he’s won, it’s just quite remarkable.

“He’s gone in and got results and it’ll take a while to get his style over but this year’s just about staying in the Premier League.

“It’s about him assessing his squad, watching him now, whether he adds anything this window, and watching them progress over the rest of the season, then watching who he brings in in the summer is going to be really intriguing.

“But blimey, I know Paul Clement really well and him having worked with him regularly he talked of him like the Messiah, he’s an unbelievable coach, manager, so, unbelievable.”

Ancelotti has overseen an immediate upturn in results at Everton since taking the reins from caretaker Duncan Ferguson.

They have won three of their four Premier League matches and climbed to 11th in the Premier League.
