Kevin Phillips: Sunderland have dropped big Sanderson hint after confirmed news
Kevin Phillips fears Sunderland may have ended their pursuit of Wolves defender Dion Sanderson.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed the signing of Manchester City centre-half Callum Doyle suggests Sanderson, 21, will not be returning to Wearside.
Sunderland confirmed the arrival of Doyle on a season-long loan deal on Friday and just 24 hours later the 17-year-old impressed on debut.
Sunderland had a £1million bid for Sanderson rejected by Wolves last month.
It is understood that the Premier League club want £2million for the centre-half who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs whether Doyle was signed as an alternative to Sanderson, Phillips said:

“Yeah I think that move tells you a lot about where they are at with Sanderson.
“From Sunderland’s point of view, I’m sure they would’ve loved to have got that deal done straight away. The longer it goes on the less likely it is going to happen.
“A new manager has come in at Wolves so the situation may have changed. He will want to take a look at him in pre-season.
“Sanderson has been linked with a few Championship clubs as well. There is a lot of talk about a move to Sheffield United at the moment.
“Hopefully, fingers crossed, he will sign for Sunderland but it is looking increasingly difficult.”
