Phillips: Sunderland have 'real reason to be excited' by third new signing Doyle

Kevin Phillips has claimed there is “real reason to be excited” about new Sunderland signing Callum Doyle.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed the 17-year-old “obviously has something about him” to have made such strides in his career at such a young age.

Sunderland confirmed the signing of the centre-half from Manchester City on a season-long loan deal on Friday.

He made his debut for the Black Cats just 24 hours later and impressed in a 2-0 win over Hearts.

Phillips is thrilled to see Lee Johnson is going to put his faith in youth in the 2021-22 campaign.

“There’s real reason to be excited about Doyle if he was a part of that Man City Under-23 side,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He obviously has something about him. Hopefully he can step up to first team football with relative ease.

“It is encouraging that Sunderland are looking to younger players. I think it is time they gave younger players an opportunity. Hopefully he can get a good run of games and make a real impact.

“It is vital they get out of this league this season so hopefully he can help them get over the line.”

Speaking shortly after his arrival, Doyle told club media: “I’m a big presence at the back and I like to bring the ball out, but I also love a duel.

“I’m over the moon to be here and I’m very excited to get started.”
