Sources: Sheffield United line up formal Sanderson move after Newcastle and Sunderland bids rejected by Wolves

Sheffield United are readying a move this week for Dion Sanderson as they look to beat Newcastle United and Sunderland to his signature, Football Insider has learned.

Newcastle have had a £1.5million bid for the Wolves defender, 20, rejected after the Black Cats had a £1m offer turned down.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Blades are now set to make a move for Sanderson as the race hots up.

The Championship outfit are keen on signing Sanderson on loan if a permanent deal cannot be agreed.

Wolves have set a £2m asking price on the young centre-back and have given him the green light to leave.

Sanderson, 21, joined Sunderland on loan last summer and established himself as a key player at the start of 2021.

He played every minute of league football in a 14-game run between February and April.

He then picked up a season-ending injury and missed Sunderland’s playoff campaign.

The defender made 26 League One appearances for Sunderland in total and scored one goal.

Newcastle have to work with a limited budget this summer, understood to be no more than £10million.

Sheffield United are gearing up for a return to Championship football after their relegation.

Slavisa Jokanovic is assembling his squad after taking the reins at Bramall Lane in May.

Sanderson signed a one-year contract extension keeping him at Wolves until 2022 ahead of being loaned to Sunderland in October.

The defender only has one senior Wolves appearance to his name after joining the club in 2007.
