Klopp is emerging as major Aston Villa counsel after Sky reveal - Phillips

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be seeking the counsel of his Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp throughout this season.

That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the ‘friendship’ between the two Anfield legends.

Villa announced the appointment of Gerrard on a three-and-a-half year contract on Thursday.

Speaking to Sky Sports (May 15th), the ex-Liverpool captain revealed he had been given advice and guidance on management by Klopp.

Football Insider revealed last week that Gerrard was set to speak to Klopp before accepting Villa’s manager offer.

Phillips believes Gerrard will look to gain advantage by seeking further counsel from Klopp on Villa’s Premier League rivals.

“I would imagine they are friends,” he told Football Insider.

“They will not discuss each others tactics and team selection when they play each other but I cannot see why they wouldn’t otherwise.

“Everyone is out there to achieve. You would never not give advice just because you are managing in the same league.

“I’m sure they will continue to talk. It is inevitable that Gerrard will become Liverpool manager at some point. I’m certain they will be helping each other. They’ll be speaking to each other throughout the season and Aston Villa will benefit.

“It will work both ways as well. Klopp will be asking Gerrard how to get the best out of his midfielders. It definitely happens.”

Gerrard will make an emotional return to Anfield on December 11th.

His first game in charge of the Claret and Blue comes against Brighton on Saturday.
