Gabriel Agbonlahor has called on Jurgen Klopp to hand Liverpool defender Ben Davies a full debut against Sheffield United at the weekend.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker delivered his verdict after Jordan Henderson suffered a potentially season-ending injury in the Merseyside derby.
The Daily Mail report the England international could miss up to 12 weeks of action and is also a serious doubt for this summer’s European Championships.
Henderson limped off after 30 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Everton and was replaced by Nat Phillips.
He partnered January loan signing Ozan Kabak in defence in what was Liverpool’s 18th different centre-back pairing of the season.
With the Premier League champions travelling to Bramall Lane on Sunday evening, Agbonlahor feels it is the perfect time to introduce Davies, a January signing from Preston North End.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He needs to play him now, he’s been there a couple of weeks.
“He was brought in to help them and now he’s going to have to play him.
“Maybe this is the game, against a Sheffield United team not in great form, he can get 90 minutes under his belt and get a clean sheet.
“You say that, but I’m sure Chris Wilder will be targeting that Liverpool defence and play more attacking.”
The Blades have scored just 15 goals in their 25 Premier League games this season and sit bottom of the table, 14 points from safety.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in the league since a 0-0 draw with Manchester United in January.
