League One manager delivers update on Newcastle 24-year-old, contract ends in six months

Sammy Ameobi looks set to remain at Newcastle after Bolton manager Phil Parkinson revealed he is looking to replace him.
The 24-year-old spent the first half of the 2016-17 campaign on loan at the former Premier League side, and it was reported that talks were ongoing about extending Ameobi’s stay in Lancashire.
However, with six months remaining on his current Tyneside contract, Ameobi looks to have been handed a chance to impress under the watchful eye of Rafa Benitez as he looks to earn a new deal.
Parkinson told the Evening Chronicle that he was looking at other January targets with it looking unlikely that the winger’s loan deal at Bolton would be extended.
“Sammy has gone back,” Parkinson said. “It’s a shame and I don’t think it’s completely dead, but they have called quite a few of their loan players back to thicken out their squad through this period.

“We’re also looking for players to replace him because we need to make sure the squad remains strong.”
Ameobi has brought back into the Toon squad after Christian Atsu jetted off to represent Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Brother of former Toon target man Shola, Ameobi was loaned to the League One high flyers in the summer after Benitez brought wingers Atsu and Matt Ritchie to St. James’ Park.
The five-time England Under-21 international has been in decent form for Bolton this term, after finding the back of the net four times this season in his 24 league and cup outings.
Football Insider verdict:
Keeping a player of Ameobi’s quality as cover in the Championship will only benefit the Toon as they look to reignite their pursuit of Premier league promotion after a sticky patch of form that has seen them lose two of their last three games. With his current deal set to expire, Ameobi will also be able to prove to the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss that he is able to provide an extra dimension to the Magpies attack as he looks to extend his contract in the north East. Ameobi’s ability to reach the byline with his electric pace and dazzling skill could prove vital in the Toon’s promotion hunt.
