Huddersfield Town have set their sights on signing Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Youngsources have told Football Insider.

The Terriers are looking to bring the 19-year-old in on loan ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Young had previously spent the 2025-26 season on loan to Salford City, where he kept 15 clean sheets in League Two and helped the club reach the playoff final.

Huddersfield are now looking to beat a number of EFL clubs to his signature as they aim to return to the Championship.

Lee Nicholls spent the majority of the 2025-26 season as the number one at the Terriers as they narrowly missed out on the playoffs.

Young could soon become Huddersfield’s second signing of the summer after the club announced the capture of Ashley Fletcher on a free transfer earlier this month.

How good is Matty Young?

During his time on loan to Salford, Young showed the fourth-tier that he is an outstanding shot stopper.

The goalkeeper had the joint-third most clean sheets in the division and consistently pulled out some fantastic stops.

According to Fotmob on 22 June, Young had some brilliant stats in League Two throughout the 2026-27 campaign.

The 19-year-old was averaging 2.68 saves, a 71.1 save percentage, 0.11 goals prevented, 0.34 clean sheets and a 40 per cent penalty save percentage per 90 minutes.

Therefore, if these stats are able to be replicated, he could become a valuable asset for Huddersfield next season if they are able to get a deal over the line.

Sources: Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn set sights on Huddersfield's Joe Taylor

What other deals could Huddersfield complete this summer?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Joe Taylor could be on his way out of Huddersfield this summer.

Both Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers are interested in a deal for the striker, who starred in a loan spell at Wigan Athletic in the back half of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 23-year-old netted 11 goals for the Latics, which helped him finish as the club’s top goalscorer, despite only making 21 appearances.

The Terriers paid a fee of around £3million to sign the Welshman from Luton Town back in January 2024, but could be about to lose him already this summer.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Huddersfield are prepared to part with Taylor this transfer window.
