Reading are lining up a move to sign Wrexham centre-back Dan Scarr, sources have told Football Insider.

The Royals are keen to strengthen their backline and have identified the 31-year-old as a clear target in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

Leam Richardson's side are part of a group of EFL clubs that are all eyeing up a move for Scarr ahead of the 1 September deadline.

The former Plymouth man started just 15 games in the Championship last term, and was an unused substitute for Wrexham's draw away at Cardiff in their opening game of the new league campaign.

Phil Parkinson's men are aiming to push for promotion to the Premier League once again this term, and that could see them offload some of their squad players.

Scarr is among those who are on the fringes of the group at the moment, and is about to be presented with a wealth of options for a move away.

Reading eye League One promotion experience

Scarr may be out of favour at the Racecourse Ground at the moment, but he is a vastly experienced campaigner across the middle levels of the EFL.

He spent several years as a key part of Plymouth's rise through the divisions, and helped them to the third-tier title back in 2022-23.

Scarr is a player who boasts a significant pedigree when it comes to the EFL, and that has thrust him firmly onto Reading's radar.

The Berkshire outfit are still working to strengthen their group after defeat to Luton on the opening day, and are expected to be working on deals right up until the deadline.

Scarr has now emerged as a clear target for them, but they will have to fend off interest from other clubs if they want to secure his signature.

Sources: Wrexham defender Dan Scarr wanted by multiple Championship clubs

Reading to battle Championship interest

Football Insider revealed at the end of June that Scarr was drawing significant interest from clubs in the lower reaches of the Championship.

The veteran defender is out of contract with Wrexham next summer, and that has prompted a raft of interest in his services of late.

If the chance to remain in the second tier materialises before the deadline, then Reading will have to put an appealing package together to tempt the player.

He is yet to feature in competitive action for Wrexham so far this season, but many teams believe he is still capable of performing at Championship level.
