Sources: Mat Sadler snubs Rotherham United offer as talks break down
Mat Sadler has turned down the opportunity to become the next Rotherham United manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The former Walsall boss held talks with the League Two club about taking charge at the New York Stadium following the departure of Lee Clark earlier this summer.
However, after lengthy discussions, Sadler has opted to reject the opportunity with the Millers, and the South Yorkshire club will be forced to look elsewhere.
Clark left Rotherham ealier this summer despite being appointed in March as he failed to agree terms over a contract extension, and has since landed the Hartlepool job.
Sadler, meanwhile, has been out of work since he was sacked by Walsall in March after enduring a run of just one win from 11 games, ending their promotion hopes.
He had emerged as the leading candidate to land the job at the New York Stadium, but after failing to reach an agreement in talks, both parties have walked away.
Who will be the next Rotherham United manager?
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 8 June that Sadler was close to landing the Rotherham job, and the club came within touching distance of an appointment.
However, they failed to reach a full agreement in the late stages of talks, and his appointment ultimately fell through, sending the club back to square one.
Following their relegation to League Two, the club are scrambling to land their next permanent manager who can guide them back up into the third tier.
The Yorkshire club were in the Championship just two seasons ago, and their dramatic drop has raised concerns about their direction.
After failing to agree terms with either Clark or Sadler in the last couple of months, those concerns are beginning to grow, with the club desperate to bounce back into League One.
What is next for Rotherham after League One relegation?
Rotherham are undergoing major changes following their relegation to League Two, with the club looking to employ a new strategy to turn around their recent collapse.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 12 May that Rotherham were in advanced talks with Steve McClaren to become their director of football, and he landed the role just days later.
McClaren has been out of work since he left his role in charge of the Jamaica national team last November, but has made a quick return to the EFL.
Former Millers defender Rob Scott is currently operating in a head of recruitment role and will now work alongside McClaren to head up their transfer plans.
The move for McClaren appears set to mark the start of the overhaul at the club, with the arrival of a new manager their biggest priority as things stand.
