Leeds Exclusive: 'I'm really worried' about Jack Harrison news - Whelan

Noel Whelan has shared his worries after Marcelo Bielsa revealed Jack Harrison is now among his Leeds United centre-forward options.

The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites are severely lacking strength in depth up front and need to consider signing a new striker.

Speaking at his pre-Brighton press conference, as quoted by Leeds Live, Bielsa revealed that he considered Harrison as a potential alternative at centre-forward if Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo Moreno or Tyler Roberts were unavailable.

The Manchester City loanee played up front briefly in the 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Crawley Town but has not been needed to lead the line in the Premier League.

Bamford has been a mainstay in the starting XI and has managed to net 10 top-flight goals so far.

Whelan, who suggested Roberts is also not a natural striker, believes Bielsa’s comments have only highlighted how light the Whites are in terms of their attacking options.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Look, he’s not a striker, simple as that.

“You sometimes can’t put square pegs in round holes and that’s exactly what we’re saying here. That just tells you that we’ve got no strength in depth in that centre-forward position, in my opinion.

“I’ve been crying out for the past two seasons that we need more strength in depth. Tyler Roberts, to me, is not a centre forward either so that says to me that we’re grasping at that position and we’re trying to fill a space with somebody that’s not that player.

“If you look at the way they’ve been playing, you’ve got a focal figure in Bamford, there’s nobody like-for-like.

“If that’s the way he wants to play, then he needs to go into the market and bring in players that can adapt and play that role just like Patrick because if he gets injured, I’m really worried about that centre-forward position because we don’t have another centre-forward, it’s as simple as that.”

Speaking about his striker options, Bielsa told Leeds Live: “After any unprecedented event, Pablo (Hernandez) can be the attacking mid and Rodrigo the striker.

“If Rodrigo’s not on the field, Harrison becomes the third option in attack if Tyler’s not available. I know what position Harrison plays in, but I have to be cautious with the needs of the team.”
