Leeds United striker Rodrigo Moreno will be high on confidence while on international duty with Spain, according to Kevin Phillips.
The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the 29-year-old’s “exceptional” performance against Manchester City could be a “big moment” in his career.
Rodrigo earned his 24th cap for Spain on Wednesday night, as he played the first 45 minutes of his country’s stalemate with Portugal.
The club-record £27million signing opened his account for Leeds last weekend in a thrilling 1-1 draw against City at Elland Road.
Phillips suggested that the goal will have given Rodrigo the belief that he can perform against any side in the Premier League.
“I hope this is a big moment for him,” he told Football Insider.
“Doing it against an elite club in Manchester City will have done his confidence the world of good going into the international break.
“I have to say he was exceptional and so were Leeds.
“As a centre-forward, when you come on against a team in the bottom-half of the Premier League and do well you are please. But to do it against City, he will think, ‘I can do it against the very best.’
“It is great for Rodrigo, Bielsa and the Leeds fans as well. We have seen him perform now.”
The striker was an unused substitute in Spain’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Switzerland yesterday.
Next up, Marcelo Bielsa’s side welcome Wolves to Elland Road a week on Monday.
