Leeds 'massively relieved' after injury expert's Phillips update - pundit

Kevin Phillips has claimed Leeds United will be “massively relieved” by Kalvin Phillips’ withdrawal from the England squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and Villa striker said the 25-year-old could have “put himself out for a long time” if he remained with Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Leeds United confirmed on October 5th that the centre-midfielder had withdrawn from the England squad with a calf strain.

Phillips is currently at Thorp Arch receiving treatment for the injury with the club’s medical team.

According to Premier Injuries, the website of Football Insider injury specialist Ben Dinnery, Phillips has a 50 per cent chance of being fit to face Southampton on Saturday.

Kevin Phillips claimed Marcelo Bielsa will be “desperate” for his midfield general to be available.

“Leeds have got an important run coming up,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“It is a sensible decision that he was withdrawn. If he did stay, he could have made it worse. He might have put himself out for a long time.

“The club will have spoken with England and made the decision to withdraw. That is great news for the player.

“Leeds have not had a great start. They need to pick up some points from these next few games and to do that you need your best players. Phillips is arguably their best player. Bielsa will be desperate to have him fit so he’ll be massively relieved.”
