Leeds & Newcastle fans react to Knockaert being named best player in the Championship

By Amir Mir

Leeds and Newcastle supporters have hit out at Anthony Knockaert after he was named the Championships Player of the Season.

The English Football League announced on its official Twitter account on Monday morning that the Brighton ace has been given the award for his performances this term.

The 25-year-old is on course to help Chris Hughton earn promotion to the Premier League as they currently occupy top spot in the table.

Newcastle duo Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie were overlooked, while Leeds’ top scorer Chris Wood was another name that was beaten to the crown.

However, supporters of both club have hit out at the player by stating he doesn’t deserve to be named the best player of this campaign.

Many felt that Leeds striker Wood has been the best player this season as the New Zealand international has scored 24 goals during this campaign.

Others also stated that Magpies winger Matt Ritchie has performed more consistently than Knockaert as they disagreed with the EFL’s decision.

Overall, supporters of both clubs were unhappy with the decision to award Knockaert with the top prize.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Over the course of the season, Knockaert has played 40 Championship games for his side, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists.

He last found the back of the net during Brighton’s 3-0 home win against Derby County in early March.

Knockaert has scored against the likes of Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday and Reading this term – the trio currently sit in the play-off places.

The Frenchman will now prepare for an away trip to Wolves on Good Friday, knowing three points could secure promotion to the Premier League.
