Leeds United would have to pay upwards of £20million to land a deal for Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics as they plot a late Ipswich Town hijack.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that Blackburn are demanding a high fee to sell to a divisional rival after his performances last season.

The Ireland international scored 33 goals in 48 appearances last season, and his goals proved vital as the club finished just three points outside of the relegation zone.

Leeds view the attacking midfielder as a potential statement signing to soften the blow if Cysencio Summerville leaves the club later this summer.

Szmodics ran the Leeds star close for last season's Championship Player of the Season award thanks to his heroics at Ewood Park.

Szmodics, 28, joined Blackburn from Peterborough United in 2022 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most sought-after players in the division.

Since moving to Ewood Park, he has found the net 40 times in 89 games, while picking up eight assists as he averages a goal contribution every 1.85 games.

His 33 goals last time out came off the back of just seven in the 2022-23 season, with a more advanced role behind the striker paying dividends.

Premier League clubs have also shown an interest in Szmodics this summer, with Ipswich Town edging closer to a deal as Leeds' interest cooled.

The priority at Elland Road remains to keep hold of their best players, with Summerville's potential exit likely to trigger a move for Szmodics, although it may be too late at that stage.

Leeds are expected to stand firm with their £35million asking price, which is likely to put off interest from the East London club, although the winger is still expected to depart this summer.
