Derby County have set their sights on a shock swoop for Leeds United star Tyler Roberts as they plot handing him a new role, Football Insider understands.
The Wales international, 21, faces an uncertain future at Elland Road if Leeds seal the blockbuster signing of Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese.
The Argentina No 10 has been earmarked by Marcelo Bielsa and the United recruitment staff for the playmaker role as discussions advance on a blockbuster deal that could smash the club’s transfer record for the second time in just days.
A Derby source has told Football Insider the club are hopeful of taking advantage of the potential De Paul signing by luring Roberts to Pride Park.
County manager Phillip Cocu and his staff regard the former West Brom man’s long-term future in the centre-forward role.
At Leeds, Roberts has been used predominantly in a central attacking midfield position, although he has spearheaded the attack in emergencies.
Bielsa has spoken highly of the versatile attacker during his two-year reign and he ended last season as a mainstay of the starting XI.
But Roberts faces the prospect of playing second fiddle to De Paul if he signs as well as the club-record £27m signing Rodrigo Moreno, who is likely to be the number one striker next season.
Roberts has been in and out of the Leeds side since signing from West Brom in a deal worth up to £4m in January 2018.
He has suffered a series of major injuries and played only 54 times for United, scoring seven goals and supplying seven assists.
