Whelan excited by 'massive' development for two Leeds rising stars

It is a “massive” step forward for Liam McCarron and Jack Jenkins to feature so prominently for Leeds United in pre-season.

So says Leeds ambassador Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the duo’s role in recent friendlies against Ajax.

Both players, who are 20 and 19 respectively, started the Whites’ two fixtures against the Dutch giants.

The pair were half-time substitutes as Jong Ajax beat Leeds U23s 3-1 in Amsterdam.

McCarron and Jenkins later featured as late subs as Ajax’s senior side put four past the Whites without reply.

Whelan claims that any player who impresses in pre-season can consider it a “big step forward” in their Leeds career.

“This is what it’s all about,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“Sometimes you get players who weren’t in the mix last season, that we didn’t know too much about, making big steps forward.

“If you look after yourself and do that little bit of extra work it can be massive for players like these two in pre-season. There’s always that opportunity at Leeds.

“I think this is why we have seen a lot of young players leave other Premier League clubs to come and join Leeds. They know they will play.

“If you’re good enough, you work hard enough and you have the right attitude, you’ll get your opportunity.

“No one is going to hold you back because it’s great for the club and great in terms of competition for places.”
