Noel Whelan has tipped Jack Harrison to be recalled to the Leeds United starting XI against West Ham at the expense of Helder Costa.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was “very, very disappointed” with the Portuguese winger after being handed a start against Aston Villa.
Costa, 27, lasted 64 minutes before he was replaced by 24-year-old Harrison in the 1-0 defeat last weekend.
It was the first league game the Manchester City loanee had failed to start since the 1-1 draw with his parent club in October.
Meanwhile, it was £16m signing Costa’s first start since the 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in November.
Whelan insisted Harrison deserved to be dropped but admitted the former Wolves man failed to take his chance.
Asked if he expected Harrison to be recalled against the Irons, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Absolutely. Look, people are given an open door to come in and take your opportunity as Helder Costa was.
“I think Jack Harrison had been quiet for three games prior. Helder Costa’s come on and made some influence on a game from the substitutes’ bench.
“I felt he deserved the opportunity. However, I was very, very disappointed once again with his contribution from the start to the time he came off.
“He didn’t take his opportunity, he didn’t take that chance. That’s disappointing because you want to give the manager a headache.
“On the other side of it, he’s made the manager’s decision, very, very easy.”
