Leeds United employee 'expects' senior star to be axed v Crystal Palace after Kalvin Phillips training reveal

Noel Whelan has tipped Kalvin Phillips to return to the Leeds United starting XI against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The former Leeds striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old has “been on the brink” of a start for weeks after his lengthy injury layoff.

As quoted by Leeds Live (22 April), Jesse Marsch confirmed Phillips is “fully fit and ready” after a “really good week” on the training ground.

Phillips has not started a game since returning from a hamstring injury, with Mateusz Klich and Robin Koch chosen in midfield for the last game against Watford.

However, Whelan insisted he expects someone to be axed to bring the England international back in.

“I expect Kalvin to start,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I think it’s a no brainer. Kalvin’s obviously been on the brink, he’s been on the sidelines but has been back now for what? Three to four weeks.

“I thoroughly expect him to put in Kalvin Phillips in a very, very important match away from home. It gives you that stability, that strength in that midfield and combativeness that you need.

“We’re coming up against a very, very youthful, energetic Crystal Palace side. They’re a joy to watch now under Patrick Vieira.

“It’s quite surprising how quickly they’ve adapted to Patrick and the change in style. Watching them now, they’re a threat from midfield and all over the field in that final third.”

As first revealed by Football Insider on Friday, Leeds will be without midfielder Adam Forshaw for the rest of the season.

The Whites confirmed the 30-year-old has suffered a fractured knee cap.
