Leeds United employee issues 'surprise' Patrick Bamford comeback verdict after training ground latest

Noel Whelan would be “very surprised” if Patrick Bamford returns for Leeds United before the end of the season.

The former Leeds striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Whites need to protect the 28-year-old as much as they “need him back”.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday (13 May), Jesse Marsch revealed Bamford would be “evaluated” over the coming days to determine his availability against Brighton and Brentford.

He refused to go into more detail, stating he just wants to give Bamford “the opportunity to progress” at Thorp Arch.

The striker has not played since the middle of March after being sidelined by a plantar fascia issue.

However, Whelan admitted he does not see Bamford featuring before the end of the campaign.

“I would be very surprised if I saw him again this season, I really would,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“As much as we need him back, he’s not played a game yet. He’s not played any kind of real 90 minutes of a game, fitness-wise. We need him for next year, whether it’s Premier League or Championship football.

“We need a healthy Patrick Bamford. Unless he’s 100 per cent sure that he can do it and he can offer something and there’s no recurrence or feeling of any injury he’s gone through, I wouldn’t be risking him.

“I’m sorry. I want to stay in the Premier League, I want us to score goals and winning football matches.

“But protection of players and their health is paramount. I just believe that he won’t be match sharp. Rodrigo and Gelhardt, they’ve got to take the responsibility on their shoulders and going show their worth.”
