Whelan predicts 'ecstatic' Bamford to sign bumper new Leeds deal after unexpected Athletic reveal
Patrick Bamford will soon enter talks with Leeds United over a “new and improved” contract.
That is according to ex-Whites forward and lifelong fan Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Athletic reported that Leeds activated an extension clause in Bamford’s contract last summer.
Contrary to earlier reports, that would mean the 27-year-old’s current deal extends beyond the summer of 2022.
However, the Athletic claims that the extension is unlikely to deter potential transfer suitors.
And Whelan insists that as one of Bielsa’s “key men”, Leeds will want to ensure Bamford’s long-term commitment to the club by offering him more lucrative terms.
“He seems happy with his game and with the manager he’s working for,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“He’s really hit the heights that we knew he could do. He’s given it many tries in the Premier League and it’s not worked out for him.
“This season has been incredible. If you score 15 goals, you’ve got to be ecstatic with that as a striker. When you do that, people stand up and take notice.
“It’s not easy to get any goals in the Premier League, let alone this season when people have been doubting you.
“A new and improved contract I’m sure will be discussed and signed, because he’s been an ever-present under Marcelo Bielsa, one of his key men.”
In addition to his 15 Premier League goals, Bamford has also turned provider on seven occasions this season.
He has started all 36 of Leeds’ top-flight matches in 2020-21.
