Leeds United were given a showreel performance by South Africa centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi against Canada in the World Cup on Sunday.

While Bafana Bafana were knocked out in the last 32 by Jesse Marsch's team at Los Angeles Stadium on 28 June, the Chicago Fire defender caught a lot of eyes with his display.

Hugo Broos saw his team concede a late goal from Stephen Eustaquio as the co-hosts continue their adventure in the tournament.

Mbokazi was a pillar for South Africa defensively for most of the game, and he could have a big future ahead of him, possibly at Elland Road if the stars align.

The 20-year-old left-footed centre-back looked calm and composed on the ball and showed great strength and desire, but that wasn't enough to lead his nation further in North America.

With Pascal Struijk reportedly on his way to Brighton and Hove Albion, the West Yorkshire outfit will need a replacement for him and the South African international has presented himself admirably at the World Cup.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi game in numbers as Canada beat South Africa

Mbokazi has been a key player for Broos this summer, playing every minute in the prestigious tournament for South Africa.

At the Los Angeles Stadium, the youngster made nine defensive contributions, winning two of his three tackles and six of his eight ground duels, with arguably the most important clearance coming in the 65th minute of the game as Jonathan David had an open goal to aim at after the goalkeeper Ronwen Williams' save.

As per Sofascore, the defender completed 94 per cent of his passes and one successful dribble, showcasing his technical ability on the ball.

Mbokazi was the focal point for Bafana Bafana, recording 103 touches, which made sense given how comfortable he was in possession.

Leeds United can turn to Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Sources told Football Insider on 24 June that Leeds shouldn't expect Nico Elvedi to leave Borussia Monchengladbach for as little as £7million this summer.

The 29-year-old Switzerland international's contract at Borussia-Park expires in 2027, but several teams are interested in him and the German club aren't expected to entertain low-ball offers.

Mbokazi joined Chicago Fire in December for around £2.2m from Orlando Pirates on a long-term deal, but his performances at the World Cup should force him onto the West Yorkshire outfit's transfer shortlist to bolster their defence.
