Leeds tipped to agree Orjan Nyland deal after scouting mission

Leeds United have been backed to make a move for Norway star Orjan Nyland as they step up their pursuit of a new goalkeeper.

Despite his age, the 35-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding tournament at the World Cup, most recently during Norway's 2-1 victory against Brazil in the round of 16.

The goalkeeper has just become a free agent after leaving Sevilla upon the expiry of his contract, and has publicly invited clubs to make offers after the World Cup ends.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Leeds could make a move to sign Nyland as they continue their search to sign a new goalkeeper.

Leeds, like most other clubs, have scouts present in the USA to track any standout players from the tournament, and are likely to have been impressed by Nyland's displays.

While his age means he would likely be a short-term option for Daniel Farke's side and would need replacing in the future, he would be an upgrade on their current options.

Could Leeds make a move for Orjan Nyland?

Brown told Football Insider last month that the addition of a new shot-stopper has become a priority for Farke as he aims to bolster his Leeds squad this summer.

Concerns about both Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow have forced the Whites into the market, where they have assessed a number of potential signings.

Nyland's performances at the World Cup have caught the eye of many watching scouts, and Leeds could now turn to him as their next first-choice goalkeeper.

"Signing a new goalkeeper has been a big part of Leeds' plans this summer," Brown told Football Insider.

"Karl Darlow had a strong season for them, but Lucas Perri struggled, and they've been looking at a number of potential options to improve on what they've already got.

"They've been aware that they need a new goalkeeper and scouts have been watching some of their targets, while they will also have been keeping an eye on the World Cup.

"Norway's goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland, has had an outstanding tournament so far and I would be very surprised if he wasn't somebody they had a look at.

"If he could perform for Leeds the way he has for Norway so far, he would be a significant upgrade on their current options, and they could certainly do a lot worse.

"His age probably isn't ideal, he wouldn't be a signing for the future, but on a free transfer it's definitely something to explore."

Which other goalkeepers are on Leeds' radar?

Despite being tipped to sign Nyland, he is far from the only goalkeeper in Leeds' sights, as they have been assessing a number of potential signings this summer.

The likes of James Trafford, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale are among the domestic options who have been linked with Leeds, but they are also prepared to look abroad.

Football Insider revealed last month that Leeds have been keeping tabs on Zion Suzuki and have been impressed by the goalkeeper's displays in Serie A.

Like Nyland, Suzuki has impressed at the World Cup before Japan's elimination, and has attracted interest from a number of clubs including Leeds and Aston Villa.

Farke's side are believed to have an edge over their Premier League rivals, though, and could look to seal a deal quickly with Aston Villa aiming to sell Emiliano Martinez first.
