Leeds United's 'concerns' about Harry Gray at Sheffield Wednesday addressed

Published on:

Leeds United have no concerns about the long-term development of Harry Gray despite his slow start at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 18-year-old joined the Owls on loan during the summer transfer window in what is only his second spell in senior football, following last season's time at Rotherham.

Last season, the forward scored three goals and provided one assist in 20 appearances, and his form at Hillsbrough has yet to take off as he is without a goal in seven games.

However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Leeds are not concerned about Gray's form and they still have high hopes for his development.

Despite the inevitable comparison's to his brother, Tottenham's Archie Gray, who burst onto the scene in the Championship and never looked back, they are ready to be patient.

Given Gray's young age and lack of experience in senior football, his displays have not been a concern for Leeds, who will continue to keep tabs on his development.

What do Leeds have planned for Harry Gray?

Football Insider revealed during the summer that Leeds were keen to send Gray on loan as they believe he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career.

Despite some suggestions that Leeds could recall him from his loan, and others claiming he will not make it at Elland Road, they remain determined to back his development.

Leeds are prepared to do whatever is best for the player long-term, and as things stand, that means allowing him to learn, adapt and develop his game at Sheffield Wednesday.

"I don't expect Leeds will have any real concerns about Gray's performances on loan," Brown told Football Insider.

"I've watched a lot of Sheffield Wednesday this season and they have been excellent, so it's not easy for Gray at 18 just to walk into the starting XI every single week.

"But that's fine, it's normal, it's just part of the process for a young footballer because he's going to have to fight for his place and he's going to have dips in his performances.

"Leeds are prepared to be patient with him because not every player is like his brother, not everybody can walk into senior football and immediately make an impact.

"Sometimes they need time to adapt and get used to the level they're playing at, but like I say, it's not going to be a concern for Leeds

"Whether or not he's capable of breaking into their team down the line, if he has that sort of potential, only they will know but they won't base it off of a small dip in form."

Do Leeds have high hopes for Gray's future?

Leeds have very high hopes for Gray's long-term development as he aims to live up to lofty expectations set by his legendary footballing family at Elland Road.

Rotherham took a gamble on bringing the striker on loan last season, giving him his first taste of senior football, and by all accounts he impressed during his spell.

While his move to Hillsbrough has not yet gone to plan, positives can be taken from his previous spell in League One, and a return to his top form cannot be ruled out.

As a result, the Elland Road club are prepared to keep a close eye on Gray's performances this season and will not rush into any decisions about his long-term future.
