Leeds United's updated stance on Orjan Nyland deal revealed
Leeds United are unlikely to pursue a deal to sign Orjan Nyland despite his availability on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 35-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding World Cup campagin with Norway, which has grabbed the attention of a number of clubs across Europe and the Premier League.
His performances have seen him tipped to make the switch to Elland Road, with Daniel Farke determined to improve his goalkeeping options during the summer window.
However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Leeds have other targets on their radar and a move for Nyland would come as a surprise.
The goalkeeper is a free agent after leaving Sevilla at the end of his contract on 30 June, and has openly encouraged clubs to make moves after the World Cup ends.
Leeds, though, are unlikely to be among those making a move, with a number of clubs from across Europe well-placed to move ahead of them in the race.
Could Leeds make a move to sign Orjan Nyland?
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 6 July that Leeds could make a move for Nyland and will have been impressed by his World Cup displays.
As he prepares to take on England in the World Cup quarter-final, however, a return to Premier League football is considered unlikely as things stand.
The goalkeeper's age is likely to be a concern for Leeds, who have other targets on their radar who they are pursuing despite Nyland's impressive World Cup.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "He's had a great World Cup. He's definitely put himself in the shop window just at the right time, having left Sevilla in the summer.
"He's been superb for Norway in helping them reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup and was outstanding in that 2-1 win against Brazil.
"He's had experience of playing in England before with spells at Aston Villa, Norwich, Bournemouth and Reading, but I would be surprised if Leeds were to make a move.
"We know Leeds are in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements, but Nyland is 35 now.
"I think probably for Leeds, if they're looking to bring in new number one, they'll probably have other targets ahead of Nyland."
Which other goalkeepers are on Leeds' radar?
Despite being unlikely to pursue a deal for Nyland, Leeds remain determined to complete the signing of a new number-one goalkeeper this summer.
A number of options have been considered, including those with Premier League experience including the likes of Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 1 July that Leeds are interested in signing Parma's Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who also impressed at the World Cup.
Reports elsewhere have claimed the goalkeeper is prepared to turn down a move to Elland Road and is not currently interested in making the switch.
However, there is a feeling he could be convinced with Leeds still keen to do a deal, as he ranks highly among the goalkeeping targets being assessed by their recruitment team.
