Romano Schmid shows he's perfect Leeds signing as Austria star hailed in World Cup win vs Jordan
Leeds United should reignite their pursuit of Romano Schmid following his World Cup debut for Austria.
The Yorkshire club have held past interest in the attacking midfielder, and there was speculation in the January transfer window over a potential move.
Instead, Leeds decided to sign Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton, whilst Schmid’s strong season continued at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.
Creating 17 big chances across the season, Schmid ended the campaign with four goals and eight assists to earn a place in Austria’s World Cup squad.
Daniel Farke has spoken publicly about being backed by the Leeds board this summer, and a new midfielder is on his radar.
In their only piece of business so far, Leeds have tied captain Ethan Ampadu down to a new contract, but further activity is expected at Elland Road.
Romano Schmid stars in World Cup win
Schmid started Austria’s World Cup opener against Jordan, and announced himself at the tournament with a curling effort into the top corner of the net in the first half.
German news outlet Bulinews called Schmid a “sought-after player” in their match report, and it was clear to see why with the way he took his goal.
Austria’s national broadcaster, ORF News, rated Schmid “very good,” and said: “The Bremen player was a tireless presence on the right wing, constantly pressing the Jordanian defence.
"Schmid was rewarded with a truly spectacular goal to make it 1-0, when he calmly curled the ball into the corner of the net from about 20 meters in the 20th minute.
“It was Schmid's fourth goal in his 35th international appearance and the highlight of the match for Austria. He remained a key player on the wing after that, but he wasn't able to make quite as much of an impact."
Schmid’s stats certainly suggest he needs to improve defensively, having won only one of his seven duels, but his ability to dictate the game in the middle of the park and score spectacular goals should certainly be of interest to Leeds.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Farke expects to have money to spend this summer, and is also eyeing up a new goalkeeper and striker.
Leeds could break the bank to confirm new signing
Leeds could also sign a new centre back before the start of the season, and Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande is high on their list.
The addition of Diomande could cost Leeds around £40million, and signal their intent to challenge for a European spot next season.
Leeds’ current record signing is Georginio Rutter, who joined from Hoffenheim for £34m in 2023.
Schmid could be available from around £15m, which could be a cost effective signing if they were to add Dembele to their squad.
