Stefan Borson shares verdict on Leeds breaching financial rules with James Trafford deal
Leeds United should have very few concerns about financial punishments despite a potential club-record deal for James Trafford.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Daniel Farke has room to overspend in the current summer window.
Leeds have already signed Harry Wilson on a free transfer and Tarik Muharemovic for £34million from Sassuolo, with a new goalkeeper to come.
Man City's second-choice goalkeeper could cost up to £50m ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, which would be a club-record signing for the Whites.
With further deals expected at Elland Road before the window closes, questions have been raised over potential punishments, and whether Leeds are at risk of breaching Squad Cost Ratio rules.
SCR has taken over from the former PSR restrictions in the Premier League, and Borson is confidence that Leeds have nothing to worry about.
Leeds United unlikely to be impacted by SCR
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson examined a £10m-a-year deal for Trafford, raising no current red flags at Elland Road this summer.
"I think SCR is unlikely to bite as a worry straight away because you've got, certainly in the first year, no sporting sanction anyway," he said.
"But they've got the 85 per cent cap, and then you can overspend as well. So you get to £115m, and they also got some player trading profits.
"They'll be very relaxed, to be honest, at the moment. The spending's not huge. Once you spread, let's say, a total deal package on Trafford is £50m, £10m-a-year, amortisation-wise.
"They've sold as well, so I think they'll want to go steady. I don't see an imminent risk of SCR issues."
Who else could Daniel Farke sell this summer?
Karl Darlow, Isaac Schmidt and Max Wober have all departed on free transfers, while Pascal Struijk joined Brighton for £20m before the new financial year.
Jack Harrison is also expected to return to the MLS, with goalkeeper Lucas Perri, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Joe Gelhardt and Largie Ramazani next on the chopping block.
Farke is in desperate need of dropping the deadweight from the squad, especially with such key players being signed left, right and centre.
Trafford is a completely different deal, though. Leeds clearly mean business with this purchase, and it could be the difference between success and failure next season.
