Leeds well placed to reignite Aaron Ramsdale transfer as Newcastle decision made

Leeds United are well placed to reignite a move for Aaron Ramsdale this summer after Newcastle decided against signing him permanently.

Ramsdale spent the 2025-26 season on loan at St James’ Park from Championship club Southampton, and is now set to return to the south coast club.

He was closely linked with a move to Leeds in the last summer window, but they instead signed Lucas Perri from Lyon.

Perri massively flattered to deceive in his debut season at the club, as he was displaced in Daniel Farke’s starting eleven by veteran stopper Karl Darlow.

Leeds want to sign a new keeper this summer to become their new number one, and Ramsdale could well be on their radar once more.

Aaron Ramsdale will return to Southampton looking for a permanent transfer away

Ramsdale failed to nail down a consistent starting berth across his season at Newcastle, but did impress in cup competitions and the Champions League in Nick Pope’s absence.

His stock has fallen in recent years since making the PFA Team of the Year in 2022-23, but the 28-year-old is still highly rated across the game and is clearly liked by Farke.

The Whites were close to signing him last summer before Newcastle swooped in and landed his services on loan.

Despite some strong showings on Tyneside, the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has reported that Ramsdale is set to return to Southampton this summer, with no deal agreed at present for Newcastle to sign him permanently.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Leeds are prioritising another goalkeeper signing this summer, and the path is now clear for them to revisit their previous interest in the 28-year-old as a reliable number one option for next season.

Which goalkeepers have Leeds been linked to recently?

Leeds have reportedly scouted Ukrainian international stopper Dmytro Riznyk ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old recently helped Shakhtar Donetsk cruise to a league title win with 16 clean sheets in 24 appearances, while they also reached the Conference League semi-finals before being beaten by Crystal Palace.

Braga stopper Lukas Hornicek is also believed to be on their radar after a strong Liga Portugal campaign, with the 23-year-old keeping 12 clean sheets in 33 matches to help them finish fourth.
