Sources: Leicester City star Fofana suffers new injury setback

Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana has suffered a setback on his recovery to fitness from his broken leg, Football Insider understands.

The centre-back, 21, has not featured this season after breaking down in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal back in August.

Leicester were hoping to have Fofana back available in early 2022 but a club source has told Football Insider he has suffered a setback in his rehab which is set to delay his return to action.

Fofana sustained a fractured fibula and damaged ankle ligaments after the wild challenge from Villareal forward Fer Nino in the pre-season friendly.

Nino apologised for the lunge in the aftermath of the clash, but that did not placate an incensed Leicester fanbase.

The defender took to Twitter to post a video compilation of him in training with a ball at his feet on 10 November (2021).

That sparked hopes among Foxes supporters that the Frenchman could be approaching a return to fitness.

But news of his setback will come as a bitter blow for Leicester, who are 11th in the league and struggling with an extraordinary absence list.

Brendan Rodgers currently has 11 players missing through illness or injury, while four more are away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Defensive stalwart Jonny Evans is among those sidelined through injury.

This site revealed last Saturday (8 January) that they are in the market for a new centre-back after it was confirmed the Northern Irishman will be out until April.
