'Russell Martin getting sacked tonight' - Leicester and Rangers fans explode

Russell Martin could well be sacked within a month of the first game of the season after Leicester City lost 4-0 to Oxford United at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Mark Harris, Mo Missanga and Jamie McDonnell plunged the Foxes further into crisis in League One, where they now sit 17th.

It has been a staggering collapse that does not look to be showing any signs of slowing for a side that won the Premier League just over 10 years ago.

Leicester are up for sale by their owners and have several gaps in their squad, having overseen countless departures in the summer.

Martin was appointed at the start of July and took the job in the hope of revitalising his career following a disastrous spell with Rangers.

But at the current rate, the 40-year-old could well be sacked and gone before even a quarter of the season has passed.

Leicester's relegation to League One was shocking, but the chance of a third consecutive battle for safety already appears large.

Martin's team were completely and utterly outplayed at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, in a display that lacked any hope for the remainder of the season.

Rangers fans may well have been frightened if they had been watching, faced with memories of the tumultuous period Martin was in charge at Ibrox.

There does not appear to have been much change in the nine months the Englishman took away from the game after he was dismissed by Rangers, although there are few more toxic jobs he could have taken.

Fans reacting to the defeat did not hold back on Martin. "Russell Martin is arguably the biggest charlatan I have ever seen," one fan wrote.

Another predicted that the 40-year-old was "getting sacked tonight", while another fan commented that "surely this is the last management job Russell Martin ever gets?"

"Russell Martin criticised for not having a Plan B. He deserves more criticism for not having a Plan A suited to League One," wrote Henry Winter.

Who would take the Leicester job?

If ever there was a management version of a poisoned chalice, it would be the current Leicester job.

While there will be plenty for the manager who can turn the ship around at the King Power Stadium, it is a task easier said than done.

The Foxes have been a downward trajectory for over two years now, and it would appear to need a miracle to get the fans back on side.

Martin, for his worth, does not appear to be that man. It remains to be seen when decision makers at Leicester find that out.
