'Let everyone down' - Newcastle 25-year-old reveals telling off from father

Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey has revealed how his father gave him the hairdryer treatment after he was sent off against Tottenham in August.
Shelvey, 25, was given his marching orders for a stamp on Dele Alli while the Magpies were holding Spurs to a draw on the opening day of the Premier League season.
Tottenham went on to win the game 2-0 after looking like they were struggling to find an opener at St. James’ Park, and Shelvey has admitted that he was receiving a telling off from all angles after the game – with his dad also getting in on the act.
“My dad gave me a telling-off after the game. And I would not come out of the changing rooms until we left to go home because I felt that bad and that I had let everyone down, which I had,” he said, as quoted on the Sky Sports website.
“But the main people that I had to get back onside were my manager, my team-mates and the supporters of the football club. That is my aim and that is what I am going to try and do.”

“I sent Rafa [Benitez] a text after the game when I was on my way home really apologising. The next day I came in and we had a little chat and it was forgotten about.”
Shelvey has since returned to Benitez’s first-team and has once again shown that he is one of Newcastle most important players with his performances in recent weeks.
The six-times England international has started all three of the Magpies’ last Premier League fixtures in which they have avoided defeat to the likes of Liverpool and Southampton, as well as beating Crystal Palace.
Newcastle return to league action on Monday night when they travel to Turf Moor to face eighth-placed Burnley.
The Magpies are just one point ahead of Sean Dyche’s side in the standings going into the Monday night fixture.
