Lewis Ferguson: Premier League switch lined up as Rangers told deal won’t be possible

Lewis Ferguson is eyeing a potential move to the Premier League this summer despite long-standing interest from Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old’s family connections at Ibrox have led to suggestions that he could one day return to Scotland, but that is unlikely to happen this summer.

His uncle, former Gers player and manager Barry Ferguson, confessed himself that the money Bologna are demanding will take him out of Rangers’ reach.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, a number of Premier League clubs would be keen to sign Ferguson.

There was plenty of interest in the midfielder before he left Aberdeen for Bologna, and his performances in Serie A have brought more clubs to the table, in a blow to Rangers’ plans.

Could Lewis Ferguson join a Premier League club?

Football Insider revealed Nottingham Forest want a new midfielder, with a number of Premier League clubs including the likes of Everton and West Ham also eyeing improvements.

While it is currently unclear whether any of those clubs are tracking Ferguson directly, his potential availability is expected to put clubs on alert.

Rangers will remain long-term admirers, but have no plans to make a move as things stand as the deal may be impossible, with others planning their own bids.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “I can’t see why not. Premier League clubs have looked at him before when he was up at Aberdeen.

“Since he made that move to Bologna, he has really stepped up and done well for them.

“That opportunity to move to Rangers has passed them by, because Rangers wouldn’t be able to afford to sign him from Bologna right now.

“I’m sure a lot of Premier League clubs will sit up and take notice of him as well, but I don’t think Bologna are any rush to sell him right now.

“He’s more likely to return maybe not to Scotland but to England in the Premier League because obviously they’d be able to afford any potential fee that Bologna would want for him.”

Why are Rangers keen to sign a new midfielder?

While interest in Ferguson is far-fetched, plans are being put in place at Ibrox as Rohl aims to add a new midfielder to his squad in the summer transfer window.

That comes amid growing interest in Nicolas Raskin, with clubs across Europe keen to lure him away from Ibrox after what has been another impressive season.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 23 April that Rangers could accept a “huge” offer for Raskin should any club step up their interest.

Having now represented the Belgium national team on 11 occasions, there is a growing feeling he could be ready to move on to a higher level.

While Rangers remain hopeful of keeping him, the right offer may tempt them to cash in, and that would force them to look for a replacement.
