French side Lille are considering a transfer swoop for Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the Ligue 1 side, who only just escaped relegation last season finishing in 17th place, are set to bid £5million for the 23-year-old.
The report goes on to claim that sources in France believe that the player is at the top of a shortlist of potential signings for the former French champions.
Simunovic signed a new contract to 2021 last season, but his form has been in a tailspin ever since, and he has found it difficult to hold down a first-team place following a dismal showing in a 4-0 loss to Hearts last December.
Football Insider verdict
Brendan Rodgers will certainly have a big decision to make should Lille indeed bid for the Hoops centre-back. The first thing to say is that the Bhoys would probably reject an offer of £5million, as they would consider that too low for a player who has three years left to go on his current contract. However, should the bid be increased then it wouldn’t be that much of a shock if the Hoops agreed to let Jozo Simunovic leave. His stock has fallen badly ever since he signed his new contract, and the fact that he is no longer a first choice centre-back for the Bhoys could factor into the decision that has to be made. There is also the situation with Dedryck Boyata’s contract to take into account, as he only has one year left on his deal, and the Bhoys won’t want to lose two centre-backs in the same summer. Only time will tell but it would not be surprising if Simunovic left the Hoops this summer.
