Jurgen Klopp's 'clever' Darwin Nunez quotes hailed by pundit after confirmed Liverpool news

Jurgen Klopp’s comments in the aftermath of Darwin Nunez joining Liverpool were “clever”.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s latest capture.

On 15 June, Liverpool announced the signing of Nunez, 22mfrom Benfica in a deal which could cost a club-record £85million.

Speaking after the signing was confirmed, on the club’s website, Klopp tried to ease the expectation that will be placed on the young attacker.

He said “it’s important we all recognise we are getting a work in progress” and claimed, “there is no pressure on him at all”.

Kenny insists this was a clever move from the Liverpool boss.

“I think it’s clever from Klopp,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It shows what a good manager he is. Just take that little bit of pressure off him.

“Once you know your manager is behind you, when you know you have a manager who trusts you, it takes so much pressure off.

“You think you can play more freely. Hopefully, that is what we see from Nunez now Klopp has said that.”

Nunez netted 34 goals from 41 matches for Benfica in all competitions in 2021-22.

He joined the Portuguese side from Almeria in the summer of 2020 amid interest from Brighton.

Nunez is likely to serve as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is expected to leave the club this summer following six years with the Anfield club.
