Liverpool are close to reaching an eight-figure transfer agreement with Crystal Palace for frozen out centre-back Mamadou Sakho, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed on their live transfer blog (Monday, 6.25pm) that the south east London Premier League side are nearing a £25million deal for the 27-year-old Frenchman with the Reds.
Sakho spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Sellhurst Park after being frozen out in the first half of the season at Liverpool after being sent home by Jurgen Klopp during last summer’s tour of the United States.
He impressed during his stint at Palace and was awarded the club’s Player of the Month in March, but an end of season injury brought an early end to his stay after just eight appearances.
However, Frank de Boer’s side have suffered defeats in all three of their opening Premier League matches and they are now seeking more reinforcements before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Football Insider verdict:
The fact that £25million is even close to being mentioned for Sakho shows how crazy the transfer market has gone and would certainly mark a fantastic piece of business for Liverpool. This is a player who has not played for the club since April 2016 and who clearly doesn’t have a future at Anfield. However, the Reds are receiving a fee that would break a number of clubs in England’s record. Palace are of course entering into desperation after their start to the Premier League campaign and Liverpool can now take advantage of that.
