Finance guru: Liverpool could sign 'biggest ever' £400m deal in move some fans will hate

Liverpool could earn £400million over five years from a shirt sponsor deal that some of their fans will hate.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the likelihood of a cryptocurrency partnership.

Liverpool currently earn £40m per year from their long-running front-of-shirt deal with finance company Standard Chartered.

But this site first revealed last month (22 April) that the Reds believe they can charge north of £50m and are in talks with several interested firms.

And the Daily Mail reported last Sunday (1 May) that the figure could even stretch to £80m in a deal that would smash the current world record.

It is understood that a cryptocurrency platform is among those with whom the Merseysiders have held talks.

Liverpool canvassed fans about the possibility of a crypto partnership earlier this year and received broadly negative responses.

But Plumley claims that an £80m-a-year offer may simply be too good to turn down.

“It’s an interesting conflict at the heart of this,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

It would be a surprise to see Liverpool go down that route given the noises we’ve heard with regards to fan opinion.

“They didn’t go down that route earlier in the year and went for the NFT angle instead.

“But if someone is offering £80m over four or five years, it would be no surprise to see that deal go through.

“To put that into perspective, it would be the biggest ever shirt deal in world football. That is where the morals and the finances collide.

“If you get an extra £30m per season, that’s the difference. Those are the margins you can transfer back onto the pitch.”

Liverpool earned £217m in commercial income last term.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple as the season enters its final act.

In other news, pundit claims Luis Diaz is “best January signing ever” and will win Champions League for Liverpool.
