Liverpool are set to battle with Tottenham for the signature of Dutch star Georginio Wijnaldum, according to a report.

Football Insider reported on Monday morning that Wijnaldum was pleading with boss Rafa Benitez to let him join Tottenham.

Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Emanuele Giulianelli has now claimed on his personal Twitter acopunt Liverpool have emerged as the latest club interested in signing the attacking midfielder.

Despite Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship last season, the 25-year-old attacking midfielder was one of the standout performers as he grabbed 11 League goals in 38 top-flight appearances.

The Dutchman has strongly hinted that he is not prepared to spend next season in the Championship as it could affect his international career.

Holland failed to qualify for this summer's European Championships, but Wijnaldum played a key role in the nations third-placed finish at the 2014 World Cup.

After earning his first International call up back in 2011, he has gone on to become an important player and grabbed the second goal in their 3-0 win against Brazil at the World Cup.

After joining for £14.5million from PSV Eindhoven last summer it appears his Newcastle performances may have done enough to seal his return to the Premier League, but the Toon club are asking for £25million for the star man.

Liverpool have also been linked with one of Wijnaldum's teammates in this window and could be set to complete a double-raid for the Newcastle duo.
